Interview with Lauri in Blick.ch

Thanks to The Rasmus Germany, here is an interview with Lauri. Translation was made with Google Translate.

Lauri from “The Rasmus” has released a solo album. In an interview with the Finn for Blick.ch he speaks about how fatherhood has changed him.
Lauri, for 17 years you are the singer of The Rasmus. What is it like to be on the road now as a solo artist?
I feel reborn! It is so refreshing and inspiring, just to make music, without thousands of people and their money involved in it. The whole The Rasmus thing had become so. I hated it. The time is now as it was when we were almost unknown with the band. I feel the absolute freedom!
Your solo album sounds very electronic. Were you tired by the guitar sounds?
I was bored by the whole rock. I wanted to make an album that I can listen to at night while driving in my car.
For three years you are the father of a son …
Yes, Julius is wonderful! Because of him I’ve changed my lifestyle completely. I had to ask from myself what I want to be him as a dad, so to think about myself and rearrange things.
In what way?
I drank no alcohol for two years or more. Especially with the band at that time I did it for a long time exaggeratedly. We celebrated after every concert at extravagant parties. And unfortunately I am a man of extremes – if I do something, then I do it properly.
Did you have a serious drinking problem?
I would not say that. For Julius, I pulled the emergency brake in time.
You have written a song for Julius.
Yes, this may be a cliché. But I felt deep inside me that I had to write “Because Of You”. I could not produce a solo album, without to have sung about Julius.
Will you be leaving The Rasmus now?
No. I meet the guys in the studio next month. I’m starting to miss them.
Lauri’s album “New World” is available in stores.

Lauri Ylönen: “Behind the Scenes” [Metropoli]

Here is a very long interview with Lauri telling about his life, career and The Rasmus and solo stuff. Translation can be found below.

Lauri Ylönen has his success as solist of The Rasmus when was 15 years old. He decided to end school because he wanted to be fully dedicated to music, with which he has spent until now 17 years.

Rasmus already grew early as the favorite of Finns, but only in 2003 released Dead Letters album brought to the band an international breakthrough. The LP also included the very popular In The Shadows song. The album is even now the best sold Finnish album outside Finland. The Rasmus has gathered a number of awards during their career, winning among others a few times the best band EMMA-award.

This year Lauri Ylönen released his first solo album, New World. The sounding of the soloalbum has changed much to the style of The Rasmus in a more electronic way. Heavy single has already been played on several radio stations. Also the solo career of the man seems to be having an international success, the album being released in a number of other countries as well. The next single of the album will be In The City for which the man was just in USA to shoot a new music video.

The first steps of music

“I was born in Helsinki. When I was 3 years old we have moved to the suburban area of the city, to Suutarila where I have spent all my childhood. Playing of the music have started already when I was 5. Being on the steps of my bigger sister my parents forced me to piano lessons. It wasn’t anything special, it was normal part of my life just like washing teeth in the evening. I remember when in primary school everyone has such nice hobbies like football or hockey. I’m however grateful that I ‘met’ with music at such an early age. I played piano altogether for 5 years, after which I changed to classical guitar. Only now I started to see the point in learning it, because with guitar you could make great riffs and play songs which myself was listening at. I also had a very inspiring guitar teacher, with whom we played all kind of rock songs in secret. Guitar was a very complex instrument which in spite woke up my interest to music. During those times I already did some songs. In primary school I was also playing drums in a school band, but it ended soon.

Singing only came in picture in the secondary school. Someone had to sing and it was a lottery who will stand at the microphone. When I first time heard my voice in the microphone it sounded so strange, but it started to grow on me. Own voice is somehow more personal instrument than guitar or drums, which you can buy from the store.

I had all kind of bands starting from primary school, where we mainly played cover-songs. Rasmus was founded in secondary school and it was the only band of mine I had during my career. All Rasmus members were in the same school and the thing started off from really friendship. We played with Pauli both guitars, and we taught each other guitar riffs. Eero was with me in the same group from the 3rd year, and we also got our drummer Janne Heiskanen. We only had fun playing in the school and in the cellar of my parents.”

Drummer of the band and change of the name

“Rasmus changed drummers 2 times. The first drummer change happened already before the first album. On the first three albums Janne Heiskanen played it, but he left the band. He wanted some holiday and decided to leave to Thailand for a longer time. We were however working hard and there was the shining of the world light dream. Being on a holiday wasn’t at that time something that belonged to the picture. Passion we needed which is the main start point of a band. Everything had to be ready just in time. It was maddening that I gave in everything in the play, even left school because of the band. There was however a good guy around, Aki Hakala, who was involved in the band after the millennium years. He was known beforehand, Aki was our merch guy on the tour. He had already some touring experience and we knew we can count on him. So it was a really easy choice. Around that time ended also our contract with Warner and we went to a Swedish one Playground Music. We changed the name with a The, because there was a DJ who used already this name. Part of our fans even went to his gigs in London, so because of this mess up we decided for the change.”

Popularity came as surprise

“In The Shadows song received popularity was at first hard to perceive and only later I could handle it being at such a big hit. The song came back at different places along like in Taiwan and New Zealand. However we took one country only at time. First we released it in Finland, after which in line were Sweden, Norway and Denmark. And then the thing went on by itself. Promotion was made in Germany, England and also USA. By now we have been at lots of places with the band. We counted that as of countries were above 50. We have traveled along the globe’s all sort of places from America to India and even to the most remote places of Russia. The Rasmus however have not performed yet in Australia. Otherwise, not even myself have been there ever. The living and the culture seem to be fascinating and after how I was told going there has the class of its own.”

Featurings

Before the solo material Lauri Ylönen’s voice could be heard in Apocalyptica’s Life Burns and Bittersweet, and also Kwan’s Chillin’ At The Grotto songs.

“I have got accustomed quite reluctantly for other songs. I don’t actually belong to such musician-group, who easily can perform in other projects. I tried to keep my concentration on my own band and take the best of it. Now I try maybe to change myself in this too. The bigger The Rasmus grew, the more serious and dangerous I changed into. I try with my solo thing a bit lighter and maybe a bit more like humorous too. Not always have to be so serious. Life is seemingly easier if you make it so yourself.”

Being solo was liberating

“Working as a solo artist was liberating and started off from the idea of the moment. There is not so many expectations from it than from The Rasmus. Despite that I made this quite big, it still feels pretty small thing, closer to the ground like cellar-band thing. It was a very welcomed change. During these times I listened to more electronic music, bands like Daft Punk and Prodigy. I’ve got a little tired of the distortion guitars and all that that belonged to rock music. I wanted to try something new which I haven’t done so far and didn’t know much about.

Playing with the electro music and buttons caused surprising moments and challenges, which also gave new energy. I’m not anymore that ossified. I had the idea of the song for long, that it would be nice to listen to something while driving during the night. It gave to the project already a world of sounds. I went to Pauli’s in Singapore to tell about the idea which we had to work on later. Some of these solo things are actually his stuffs. From them had to develop at first the The Rasmus songs, but because we made them entirely on synthesizer and computer it was pretty hard to realize them with a rock band. And the same, would have killed all our visions. The career of The Rasmus will continue without being disturbed by my solo career. Just in the morning I have met with Aki and we agreed that in the summer we start making new songs for The Rasmus. For the release of the new album there is no schedule yet, first we have to have good songs in the pocket.”

Artistic approach

“The making of a song is always a mixed process. Making the solo project I had only small ideas. I haven’t tried to make out whole songs which have a huge story behind. They all left from taking up key words and built the elements around them. I have managed therefore to make it more artistic even the making of, which was actually really fun. I tried to make also more minimalistic material, where there is space to breath. Songs don’t have to explode, they just have to work good. The making of pop songs is however already in my veins.

With The Rasmus we always tried to make songs that are ‘colorful’, big. The band already has 7 albums behind and somehow it feels like all the ideas ended. It was refreshing to make something new/fresh using new methods. Solo stuff will come to be continued later. It was good when we cleared that we keep The Rasmus and poprock and I come to demonstrate my artistic side in a solo project. I was a bit bitter about the solo project change. For sure I will make a second solo album and it already has some done ideas.”

Gigs

“During summer I have some festivals in Finland, which may be followed by a small touring. And then we go on with it outside Finland and we make some kind of European tour. 10-15 countries are at least that notified us on wanting to release the album, but only sometime in autumn. New World was made through my own record label, which brought with it a few more challenges.

At live gigs will come together two more guys. Ilkka Hämäläinen who is DJ and also played saxophone at previous gigs of Rasmus. Antti Eräkangas have been playing guitar in Kwan. He is also a very special studio person and was with me putting the album together. At gigs surely will come something humorous as well and might be guests that will give to the sound more look. Singers might as well come to stage some more. Also the songs will sound much more different than they do on the album. All living, they are still under construction, we just started the rehearsals.

For the performances we made two huge iron cages, but they sure are 200kilos, and the moving of them is pretty hard. We’ll see where they fit in. The visual part of the solo stuff is for sure more different from The Rasmus. I don’t really jump around the stage, but be more static. For sure also some light show will be part of every performance.”

Promised remixes of the songs

“From the new songs it’s easier to make own version which fits the nature of the project. When The Rasmus songs needed to be remixed they easily became just weird. From the solo material this just works good. They can be a bit brighter and experimental, but it’s no need they would sound like the original.”

Musicvideos

“I was just shooting video in Las Vegas and Los Angeles for In The City song. It was a really funny trip. I’m the one responsible for In The City and Heavy videos ideas and content. The recently shoot video is actually a continuation of the previous video, so the adventures of Amanda puppet now continue in the USA. We tried to get an unreal feeling for it. I can’t really tell the exact date of the release of the video. When we get it done, then it will get a premier sometimes at the end of May, beginning of June.”

Fatherhood changes the world of the thoughts

“Becoming a father has changed me a lot. I have a great dad and I would like to offer this chance also to my son. It means only that I cannot live so selfish as I did in the past 30 years. Getting old is in a way good, because I’ve got enough to rampage and see the life. After getting a child it felt only natural to take everything in a more relaxed way. It’s amazing that I have a small guy who is just starting to try the world. Besides all these my eyes opened up on many things in another light. Can notice small things and can value them, and those that I always taken for granted.

Some people make a big deal out of making money. If you make a lot of work, usually that is paid good. Now I have taken a few years quite relaxed and just played with my child. Really, those incomes just lowered to a more normal level (closer to the normal people wages). I haven’t been then this happy, although I have done about 20 hours of work a day, even if I got money for it. I’ve enjoyed a lot more family-life, for which there is no payment. All kind of stages of life come and go, and it’s pleasure to testify them.”

Feathers as a trademark

“I don’t really know why earlier I started putting feathers in my hair. I used sometimes white feathers when I had blonde hair. There should be some freedom symbolic stuff and suspicion in it. I get feathers in letters from all parts of the world. Another British guy have registered an own star to me, which is most probably one of the weirdest presents I have ever got. So somewhere in the universe there is a star that is called Lauri Ylönen.”

New Inroads

After the release of a solo album it’s a must to wonder about what else we can get from the Lauri Ylönen idea factory.

“I always make things at full, so I don’t have the capacity to fumble also several other things. Then I cannot make things stop just in my pocket. It has been a lot of work when I did everything for the album by myself. I cannot handle this anymore.”

Plans of the future?

“I was thinking to start with the grill season and have a sunny summer, swim a lot in the sea while the water is suitable for swimming.”

Words for the readers

“Keep it unreal!”

This housework Lauri Ylönen hates!

Lauri @ EMMA Gaala 2011

Thanks to The Rasmus Germany, here is a small interview/article with Lauri from Metrolive talking about his life, what he hates doing around the house and why he hates going out on a Friday evening. Translation can be found below.

The Rasmus’ solist Lauri Ylönen have been half of his life a celebrity. Nevertheless he doesn’t find his celebrity being distressing.
-My life is quite unusual in many ways, but it became normal to me. I built a clear path, on which I can drive without muzzle. I don’t really want to go out on a Friday evening to the cinema. Cider drinker teens’ finger-pointing applause can become quite disturbing.
Ylönen and his fiancé PMMP’s Paula Vesala live in two houses: in a modest wooden house in Helsinki’s Vallila and in a three-floor 150 sqm house in Helsinki’s Jollas. The couple has a son, Julius, who has been born in 2008. During the break from the gigs Ylönen mainly focused on his family.
-I enjoy housework, except for dishwashing. Our dishwasher just broke down, Lauri Ylönen told.

Here there is a 3-minute audio interview from NRJ Radio Finland in which Lauri speaks about his well being and of quitting drinking because it was best for him. He also told that he tried quitting already once about 3 years ago but then Aki came like ‘Let’s go to the bar!’ and he started drinking again. Thanks for the sharing to Oana/PMMP&TheRasmus Forum.

Lauri in Las Vegas [City Interview Update]

Lauri in Suosikki

We posted an interview with Lauri previously here from City Magazine. The website was updated with some flash questions more. So here comes the translation of them.

Wash your feet with vichy!

The Rasmus guys wash their feet always after gigs with vichy. Try it you too! Lauri teaches you!

  1. 1.       How much vichy do we need to wash our feet?
    One bottle is enough.
  2. 2.      Do we pour the water into the container or directly on feet?
We put on the floor a double towel. We pour then the mineral water on the feet slowly while rubbing the toes.
  3. 3.      Do we use soap or something else?
Nothing. After washing we dry the feet well and leave it about 7 minutes to rest.
  4. 4.      Is Pellegrino the best?
San Pellegrino is the best, but others are good to if there isn’t anything better. Though I don’t recommend flavored water.
  5. How does it feel being washed? What kind of feeling remains?
It’s heavenly, also the washing and after the washing.

Lauri’s addiction situation

After the interview it still was doubtful is Lauri has any bad vices. We sorted it out via phone from Las Vegas during Easter.

Hei Lauri! How long have you been now without drinking, or you took a taste of the party again?
Heh, I am. Have been now for 2 years without drinking. Going to parties doesn’t always include only alcohol. And now, I haven’t ended with it because of my son, as the newspapers tell, but because of myself. It’s better to be. I’m more like that on-off guy that we drink or not.

What else is that you pull on? What for you have addiction then?
I don’t use anything else than coffee. It’s the only vice, if you can count that like it. With The Rasmus coffee is to us the thing that keeps anyways. With that you can play, with drinks not.

Okay. On a range from 1-10 how much you miss Julius right now?
Well ten! I have just read to him a tale via Skype. It’s morning here now.

Have fun! What are you doing anyways in Las Vegas?
We make here a music video, I come back until May Day. We rented a red car with which tomorrow we leave to Los Angeles.

Lauri in City Magazine

Lauri on the cover of City

Thank you for Oana/PMMP&The Rasmus Forum for sharing the link of the article of the interview with Lauri that has been published in the new issue of City Magazine. You can find a  translation of the article below.

We’re living now spring when Lauri’s great solo album New World has been released, but it was starting to take shape in autumn 2009. The latest The Rasmus album Black Roses was released a year ago and all four members of the band managed to have a family for themselves by now. Guitarist Pauli Rantasalmi is living with his wife and son in Singapore. During autumn 2009 singer Lauri travelled to Singapore to meet Pauli. The aim was to make new music for The Rasmus.

-Pauli knows all the best restaurants of Singapore and he has in his home’s veiling a studio. I had a feeling like I want to make music that can be listened during the night when driving the car, that kind of music. I haven’t thought about it is or not Rasmus stuff. Then I haven’t even thought about a solo project, and didn’t believe in one.
Singapore is quite clean place, and came a feeling like in this music you can imagine to belong shining cars and hotel panoramas. Then came the Blade-Runner movie feeling to. We went to search for such sounds, Vangelis style music. Kind of 1982 styled genre: dark sci-fi world.

-Immediately left to a synthetizer-based music. And then had to try it with The Rasmus to fit. We had to make a vision that could be felt also in Singapore which was basically lost. Then we had to add the guitars, the real bass and the drums properly. Wasn’t that enthusiastic anymore.
We tried with The Rasmus to rock a bit, but those songs became lifeless and synthetic, and the vision didn’t remain the same.

This is how during autumn 2009 The Rasmus didn’t managed, and Lauri’s solo album New World was born. Also in Singapore was born song Heavy, which is now Lauri’s first single.

You all The Rasmus guys are 32 this year and you have family and children. How was like your situation during autumn 2009?
-When I turned 30 in my life started to happen big things: I got a child. It was good, and I think that I still have time to play.
I was a little anxious that Rasmus has grown so big and so slow working. It’s a great workplace and nice to play with mind now that I can do this solo, but I was missing these small changes work. Those feelings that things can go like shit too. Not always playing safe.

What kind of a life you had in the past two years?
From that moment when I invented to make a solo album and I called the guys if it’s ok to them, from then a new day has come to me. I was pretty active and was easy to work. It was like that for half a year. In December started to make the album. I have never made an album in such short time. It was like a fast way to work which belonged more like to the very beginnings of The Rasmus times. Then we thought that we have 11 songs and we go to studio and make them all. Not like, we make 40 songs and then try to make a whole of them all.
I personally am at the end of the ideas for rock stuff. Not that much into making songs with guitars. It’s pretty nice sitting with open eyes and listening how something can sound.

How Pauli, Eero and Aki thought about your solo project?
We’ve met together in the morning with Aki and I told him where I’m going. He was interested about it. Asked if the radios started to play the song. It’s a bit weird, that before we went together everywhere and it’s now alone.

You all Rasmus guys are supposed to meet at the end of July and try to make new music. What do you think about it?
-We’ll go to training at Nosturi and start to make new Rasmus stuff just as we did before.

But you just said that being with guitars doesn’t interest you anymore.
-Not right at the moment, but if I feel good, then many songs can be born.

Do you all still believe that The Rasmus will have a new album?
SURE!

You made music since you were 16. Can you make a difference between how is like to be a celebrity and a normal life?
-It appears still when you are with friends walking along. It’s like it’s not distressing you anymore when all stare at you. Oh I’m noticed. I made such shell around me so I can eat in peace in a restaurant even when people at the next table are staring at me. I also arranged my life that way so I can easily get rid of this. Normal family circumstances and meetings with the parents, we don’t even talk about these things. I try to keep all these out of the world so they remain untouched.

Was it nice to you to have a normal life after The Rasmus went to a pause?
-Well I’m a bit reclusive about my desires. I have been for a few years without alcohol, so not anymore hanging around bats. Some methods have changed, and I have spent more time with my family.
This does not mean that I haven’t been making music. I have been everyday in the studio. I go there in the morning and make some coffee. I have a lovely studio with view on the sea. And while the coffee is boiling, what do we do today? I get from home to work. And that’s how it works.

Have you managed to explain to your child Julius that dad has to leave to work?
-Yeah, daddy goes also today morning to work.

The Rasmus always had the nice band image. And then you spoke about drinking alcohol. A friend of mine told that has been talking with a friend of a band member after you had this tour together with HIM and Negative in Germany. I was told that in the evening Ville Valo was carried to the hotel to sleep. And then the same friend talked with a member of him about the same tour who said that it was a relaxing tour and there was no adventure. Is this your nice image really true?
-Maybe the consumption of the alcohol has been less to us than for other bands. I have been chatting with members of other bands who have been touring around the world. They have a lot that haven’t seen. They seen only the tourbus. Also i have woke up at 6 in the evening in the tour bus. There is much to experience in this world.
At the next tour I will try to get out more of bus to see those places. Drinking makes you tired. Despite it’s almost 2 years since I ended it, still feels like it makes me tired at some point. It doesn’t feel good at the moment. Also Ville is sober now for almost 4 years. This is about to becomes a trend.

Now I would like to hear the truth about your solo albums’ probable touring. Are you leaving to perform your solo songs, if yes when and where to?
-As soon as possible, and as many gigs as possible. Maybe in June is the first gig, but hopefully sooner. We play at festivals if asked. In the studio we already have ready the live set and we train there. I have two guys with me there.
We made two iron cages and behind those the two guys are playing electronic drums. Myself play synthetizers. I really want another feeling than at Rasmus gigs. At Rasmus gigs I’m more into climbing and jumping, this is more static stuff like Kraftwerk gigs.

Those two friends from New World album and at the upcoming gigs are Ilkka Hämäläinen and Antti Eräkangas. Where from they came along?
-Antti was in Kwan. Ilkka Hämäläinen was my classmate since the 3rd form. Ilkka has been also playing at gigs for The Rasmus saxophone and he is also a DJ. Sure more are to come to the live gigs.

Planning to show everything immediately?
-Yeah, despite that humble we’re leaving. It’s said that during autumn we have a 300 people gig on a ship, but there should also be space so all the cages fit there and have to get also permission. We have to get our world there. If the gig is in a basic rock club then I’m willing to make something different than before have been seen.

You seem to be in a really good condition. Are you going to gym?
-We’ve been together with Aki also today in gym. I don’t practice bodybuildng, it’s more like jogging, running on a treadmill. It sounds romantic to pull the sneakers on your feet and leave running. If I want to make good songs, then have to feel good. I get so much time, if I want to feel good mentally and physically.

Have you ever had such impression that you have been hooked during a performance or gig? You are, aren’t you?

-Yeah surely I am. Just now Apocalyptica left for a tour…they are good friends of mine. Rasmus has about one and half year on tour. In fact that’s a lot that you have to be on the tour bus and get accustomed to the trip atmosphere. At that point when the bus is moving you forget about the greyness of the world. The whole involved way more than just stage performance. Roadtripping with friends. It has its own romance.

Is it any way hard to leave behind Julius when the tours are long? Now that you have been a babysitter when Paula had gigs.

-I haven’t been away more than 3 weeks from him when touring. In 2005 when In The Shadows was big hit been 250 days away from Finland. Then would have been hard to be in contact if would have had a child. I don’t know how in the future will be.

Lauri: “I quit drinking because of my son!”

Thanks to Oana, here are two articles about Lauri from Iltalehti and Iltasanomat where Lauri talks shortly of why he quit drinking alcohol. A whole article/interview with him can be found in the new number of MeNaiset (7/2011). A translation of the Iltalehti article can be found below (Iltasanomat says the same).

Lauri Ylönen, 31, says that becoming father finally ended his long adolescence. His ‘adolescence’ goes on with the band’s life and when touring with The Rasmus.
-Before I was up until seven in the morning, but now I wake up at that time to play with my kid. I also ended use of alcohol. I realized that it is my responsibility to take care of my son and give him a wonderful childhood just like mine was, the man told to MeNaiset in the interview.
Lauri and his fiancé, PMMP’s Paula Vesala’s first born son is 3 years old this April. Paula told publicly that a second child would be welcomed.

Lauri also will be guest at Summeri on 10th April from 10.30 AM Finnish Time, where they will make puppets as well. Here is a short promo video made with him.
